Living with PTSD or complex trauma can feel overwhelming, isolating and exhausting. Many people in Newton Abbot, Torquay, Teignmouth, Bovey Tracey, Dawlish, Totnes and wider South Devon put off seeking therapy because they’re unsure what to expect. Understandably, some worry it will be too formal, too clinical or simply too expensive. That’s why my approach aims to offer something different: calm, friendly and down-to-earth counselling in person, at a pace that suits you, and at a very reasonable price.
I work face-to-face with adults and young people who are dealing with trauma, anxiety, stress, low mood, grief, difficult life events and problems in relationship dynamics. My clients come from a wide range of backgrounds and many have served in the armed forces. Whoever you are, you’ll be welcomed with warmth and without judgement.
The first call and initial meeting
Most people pick a counsellor not because of their qualifications, but because they feel comfortable with them. That’s why the free initial phone call, where we introduce ourselves to each other, is calm and unhurried. You can explain why you think counselling will benefit you, and I’ll listen carefully so that you feel confident enough to meet face-to-face. During the first session, which is also free of charge, I’ll explain what counselling is, and also what it isn’t. Counsellors don’t give advice. Instead, we’ll explore your situation together and find an approach that fits you.
I like sessions to have some structure, as most of my clients do, but there’s always space for you to speak freely about whatever is on your mind. Respecting what feels most important to you in the moment is a crucial part of the process.
Person Centred Therapy as the foundation
My work is grounded in Person Centred Therapy (PCT), developed by Carl Rogers and widely regarded as the foundation on which all other methods are built. He believed that people can self-heal when they are truly heard, understood and accepted. In practice, this means offering empathy, genuineness and unconditional acceptance. This may be a new experience for many people living with PTSD, and it’s often the moment where real change begins.
Bringing trauma-informed CBT into the work
On top of that foundation, we add specific tools for PTSD and CPTSD*, particularly Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TI-CBT). This is practical, structured and based on research, and it requires some effort between sessions. As I often say, if you only put in an hour a week, there will be progress but it will be slow. My goal is always to help you as much as possible whilst keeping the cost down.
A key part of CBT is psycho-education, which helps you to understand why your body and mind react the way they do. Many symptoms (such as shame, guilt, intrusive thoughts and physical reactions) are normal responses to abnormal experiences. When people learn this, they often say: “Nobody’s explained that before.” We also explore coping methods such as breathing exercises, mindfulness and other body-based techniques, because sometimes you heal the mind through the body.
Other useful methods include gentle exposure techniques, where you revisit the traumatic material step by step in a safe environment. For some clients, “walk-and-talk” sessions in nature can add another layer of support, as the grounding effect of being outdoors is well known to help with stress, anxiety and trauma.
Moving forward together
Trauma therapy isn’t always easy; it can be challenging for both client and counsellor. However, the process is collaborative, respectful and entirely at your pace. My aim is simple: to provide caring, affordable therapy in pleasant surroundings, including evening and Saturday morning appointments for those juggling work or family life in Newton Abbot, Paignton, Torquay and across South Devon.
If you’re struggling with PTSD, trauma or long-standing emotional pain, you don’t have to face it alone. I’m here to offer support, structure and a safe space to begin healing when you’re ready. To get started, you can either give me a call on 01803 873293 or 07792 933276 or fill in my contact form. I look forward to hearing from you.
*CPTSD or C-PTSD – Complex Post-Traumatic stress disorder. This is often associated with child abuse or neglect, or violent relationships. It generally develops over a long period. Sometimes there are no prominent traumatising events; just a steady wearing away over months or years.
